Kaum ein Störungsbild verdeutlicht so klar die befreiende Wirkung von datengestütztem Wissen auf Konzeptionalisierung und Behandlung wie die Borderline-Persönlichkeitsstörung (BPS). Noch vor wenigen Jahren galt diese als eine chronisch verlaufende und schwierig zu behandelnde Störung mit hohen Suizid- und geringen Remissionsraten. Die Diagnostik war unscharf und abhängig davon, welcher therapeutischen Schule der jeweils Behandelnde angehörte. Die neurobiologische Grundlagenforschung machte folgerichtig einen weiten Bogen um dieses undifferenzierte Konvolut, aber auch die pharmakologische und psychotherapeutische Forschung beschränkte sich auf einige wenige Untersuchungen mit kleinen n-Zahlen und daher kaum interpretierbaren Ergebnissen.
