Als der Begriff »Verhaltenstherapie« vor genau 50 Jahren zum ersten Mal in einer wissenschaftlichen Publikation auftauchte, hätte kaum jemand gedacht, dass dies den Anfang der bisher größten Erfolgsgeschichte in der Behandlung psychischer Störungen und verwandter Probleme markierte. Gibt man heute den Suchbegriff »Verhaltenstherapie« oder seine englischen Entsprechungen bei Google ein, so erhält man je nach Tagesform der Internetsuchmaschine 6–7 Millionen Treffer, weitaus mehr, als man in einem Menschenleben lesen kann.
