Unter Herzinsuffizienz versteht man üblicherweise ein kardial bedingtes, unter Ruhe- oder Belastungsbedingungen absolut oder relativ vermindertes Herzminutenvolumen. Die Herzinsuffizienz muss von der Kreislaufinsuffizienz abgegrenzt werden, deren Ursachen mehr im Bereich des peripheren Gefäßsystems (Vasodilatation bei Sepsis, vagovasale Reaktion) oder des zirkulierenden Blutvolumens (Entblutungsschock, Leber- oder Nierenerkrankung mit Wasserretention), der Herzklappen und des Perikards liegen.
