Breast cancer can be a devastating disease and should be diagnosed, if possible, at an early stage. There are a variety of risk factors in breast cancer, and the surgeon should take a careful history to evaluate those risk factors. The breast examination should be detailed, and mammography should be performed on every patient, especially if over the age of 40. A variety of types of breast cancer are discussed as well as the need for genetic testing and counseling in high-risk patients. Treatment of breast cancer is described.
