Abstract
The Object Naming Service (ONS) is a central lookup service of the EPCglobal Network. Its main function is the address retrieval of manufacturer information services for a given Electronic Product Code (EPC) identifier. This allows dynamic and globally distributed information sharing for items equipped with RFID tags compatible to EPCglobal standards. However, unlike in the DNS system, the ONS Root is unipolar, i.e., it could be controlled or blocked by a single country. This could constitute a major acceptance problem for the use of the EPCglobal Network as a future global business infrastructure. In this article we propose a modification to the ONS architecture called MONS, which offers multipolarity for ONS and corresponding authentication mechanisms.
