Abstract

Although the goal of making database systems self-tuning remains elusive, there has been progress in this field in specific areas.We review some of these advances and also comment on directions that appear to be promising. In our view, the current architecture of the database systems makes building self-tuning database systems especially challenging. Therefore, it may be worth rethinking some of the key aspects of today’s systems. Finally, we share our thoughts on opportunities and open issues, both in the context of self-tuning database systems, and the database field at large.
