Zusammenfassung
Die evolutionäre Erkenntnistheorie ist eine Evolutionstheorie kognitiver Leistungen. Als konsequente Ausweitung der biologischen Evolutionstheorie beschreibt und rekonstruiert sie solche Leistungen als Resultate der Evolution durch natürliche Auslese. In Ansätzen geht sie ins 19. Jahrhundert zurück und verdankt wichtige Impulse Charles Darwin (1809–1882), der zwar noch nicht den Begriff benutzte, ihr aber durch seine Beschreibung und Erklärung psychischer und mentaler Phänomene auf evolutionstheoretischer Grundlage die entscheidende Richtung gewiesen hat. (Der Begriff evolutionäre Erkenntnistheorie geht – als evolutionary epistemology – auf den amerikanischen Psychologen und Philosophen Donald T. Campbell (1916–1996) zurück, der ihn in den 1950er Jahren geprägt hat.) Andere frühe Vorläufer der evolutionären Erkenntnistheorie sind, um nur drei zu nennen, der Philosoph Herbert Spencer (1820–1903) sowie die Physiker und Philosophen Ernst Mach (1838–1916) und Ludwig Boltzmann (1844–1906) (zur Geschichte s. Campbell 1974).
