Part of the book series: Lecture Notes of the Unione Matematica Italiana ((UMILN,volume 6))

The preceding computations, motivated by understanding the magnitude of forces of interaction, have dealt with quite simplified models where only linearized elastic effects were involved, so that no large displacement could be taken into account, where there was no temperature, and where a much too simple crystalline framework was involved, but they have shown the difference of order of magnitude in one, two or three dimensions.
