Abstract

Gastric cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Surgery is the primary treatment modality for resectable gastric cancer. An estimated 50% of the disease is resectable. However, the cure rate after surgery alone for locally advanced cancer is low, while the overall survival rate after completed D2 is around 30% in most parts of the world other than Japan, where the rate approaches 60%. Adjuvant treatment, which include perioperative chemotherapy and postoperative chemoradiotherapy has been demonstrated to improve survival for locally advanced gastric cancer.
