Abstract
In critically ill patients percutaneous dilational tracheostomy has become the alternative to conventional open surgical tracheostomy. Several competing techniques exist to facilitate percutaneous dilational tracheostomy. Here we summarize current findings on the feasibility and constraints of percutaneous dilational tracheostomy in critically ill patients, regardless of the technique employed.
