The determination of spatial orientation is becoming increasingly important in a great variety of applications. In consumer electronics, this is mostly reduced to the resolution of accelerations in a body frame to calculate a device’s inclination with respect to the vector of gravity. Current applications include handheld input controllers for maneuvering through virtual reality environments or simple gaming with Nintendo’s Wii Console. Sony’s PS3, which is to become commercially available in the course of 2007, apparently uses gyroscopes in addition to accelerometers.
