Aktuelle Schätzungen gehen davon aus, dass bei ca. 8% der deutschen Bevölkerung ein Diabetes mellitus vorliegt, wobei 90% davon an einem Diabetes mellitus Typ 2 leiden Jenseits des 55. Lebensjahres sind 16% der Menschen betroff en. Der Diabetes reduziert häufig die Lebensqualität für die Betroffenen, und er verkürzt die Lebenserwartung um ca. 10 Jahre. Die Entwicklung von mikrovaskulären, v. a. aber makrovaskulären Folgeerkrankungen wie Herzinfarkt und Schlaganfall sind für die deutlich verkürzte Lebenserwartung verantwortlich.
