Das gemeinsame klinische Symptom aller Formen der Sklerodermie ist die krankhafte Anhäufung von Kollagen in den betroffenen Geweben und namensgebend v. a. in der Haut. Nach klinischen Gesichtspunkten sind im Wesentlichen zwei Formen unterschieden worden: die lokalisierten Sklerodermien und die systemischen Sklerodermien. Neuere große Kohortenstudien zeigen jedoch, dass auch die lokalisierten Formen eine „systemische“ Mitbeteiligung innerer Organe aufweisen können. Beide Formen treten im Kindesalter sehr selten auf, genaue Zahlen zur Inzidenz und Prävalenz fehlen.
