Die Intensivmedizin hat die Fortschritte der Chirurgie erst ermöglicht, andererseits führen die Möglichkeiten der Intensivtherapie zu Grenzsituationen, in denen die Wiederherstellung des Patienten nicht mehr zu erwarten ist und das bereits eingetretene Sterben verlängert wird. Diese Grenzsituationen sind gekennzeichnet durch den Übergang vom Zustand einer schweren, aber möglicherweise reversiblen Erkrankung in den irreversiblen Prozess des Sterbens.
