Zahlreiche Studien konnten die Wirksamkeit psychotherapeutischer Behandlungen für Bulimia nervosa belegen. Die kognitive Verhaltenstherapie gilt derzeit als Methode der Wahl (Shapiro et al. 2007). Trotz guter Responseraten beendet jedoch ein beträchtlicher Teil der Patientinnen die Therapie nicht frei von Symptomen (Hay et al. 1999). Hinzu kommt ein erhebliches Rückfallrisiko von schätzungsweise 20 bis 50%, insbesondere in den ersten Monaten nach Beendigung der Behandlung (Halmi et al. 2003; Olmsted et al. 2005; Richard et al. 2005). Diese Punkte verdeutlichen, dass für viele Patientinnen eine Nachsorge nach Abschluss einer Therapie sinnvoll ist, um das Erreichte zu stabilisieren, weitere Verbesserungen zu erzielen und Rückfällen vorzubeugen.
