Die Leber spielt eine zentrale Rolle in der Bereitstellung von Energie, der Synthese von Proteinen und Peptiden sowie der Metabolisierung von Lipiden und Kohlenhydraten. Chronische Erkrankungen der Leber führen unweigerlich zu erheblichen Problemen der körperlichen Entwicklung, einer verminderten Gewichtszunahme und einem verzögerten Längenwachstum bis hin zum Wachstumsstillstand. Gerade Kleinkinder mit chronischen cholestatischen Erkrankungen sind durch eine Malnutrition gefährdet.
