Part of the book series: Genome Mapping and Genomics in Animals ((MAPPANIMAL,volume 3))

The past few years have brought dramatic changes in the availability of genomic resources for the turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), from just a handful of genetic markers and sequences to over hundreds of genetic markers and thousands of DNA sequences. Several genetic linkage maps, which have served as the framework for functional genomic studies of traits such as round heart and AFB1 toxicity, will soon be integrated into a single medium density map for the turkey, and the map will be aligned with the chicken whole genome sequence. Refinement of the turkey genetic, physical, and comparative maps will enhance future studies determining the location of quantitative trait loci that have significant effects on production traits and disease susceptibility in this species.
