Abstract

This paper attempts to make a summary of current models used to evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF and develops a new modeling to analyze the packet delay. The main contribution of this paper is that we found the backoff process of DCF can be considered as a Bernoulli Trials process. The new modeling based on the Bernoulli Trials can be a standard to analyze and validate other analytical methods. It can avoid confusion and conflicting produced by different simulation and calculating methods. In contrast to traditional work in the literature, we use our modeling to calculate the average backoff windows and average packet delay. At the same time, verify the analytical results by Monte Carlo and OPNET. The conclusion shows that the new modeling and analysis are comprehensible, simple and accurate.
