Landslides as Important Disturbance Regimes — Causes and Regeneration

  • Chapter
Gradients in a Tropical Mountain Ecosystem of Ecuador

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 198))

Landslides are part of rapid mass movement events, and considered processes of denudation. The classification scheme in Fig. 24.1 identifies different processes with regard to the type of movement in relation to the type of material (Varnes 1978). Other classification systems (e.g. Ahnert 1996; Crozier 1986a; Dikau et al. 1996; Hutchinson 1988) consider the medium of transport (gravitation, pore water, snow, soil ice, etc.) or the velocity of the phenomenon (rapid, intermediate, slow).
