Summary
The main methods of obtaining ā3Dā data in optical/infrared astronomy are briefly reviewed before focussing on integral field spectroscopy (IFS). The major techniques are compared using a simple figure of merit: the specific information density. Although this analysis strongly favours image slicing generally, considerations of complexity, cost and signal/noise optimisation for a particular astrophysical study may produce different results. The advantage of using the Advanced Image Slicer paradigm to maximise both throughput and sampling effciency within a small instrument volume is noted; together with the technical challenges. The range and diversity of IFS instrumentation currently available and planned is demonstrated. This shows that IFS is now a mature technique, central to the aspirations of all observatories and of great relevance to Extremely Large Telescopes.
