Der Hirntod wird definiert als Zustand der irreversibel erloschenen Gesamtfunktion des Großhirns, des Kleinhirns und des Hirnstamms. Dabei wird durch kontrollierte Beatmung die Herzund Kreislauffunktion noch künstlich aufrechterhalten.
