Asthma bronchiale und COPD (»chronic obstructive pulmonary disease«) sind obstruktive Atemwegserkrankungen, die einige Gemeinsamkeiten, aber auch Unterschiede aufweisen (·Tab. 39.1). Beide Erkrankungen sind durch eine obstruktive Ventilationsstörung gekennzeichnet. Asthma bronchiale kann bereits im frühen Kindesalter auftreten, wohingegen die COPD eine Erkrankung des Erwachsenen ist und jenseits des 60. Lebensjahres den Altersgipfel hat. In über 80% der Fälle wird die COPD durch aktives oder passives Rauchen verursacht. Exazerbationen sind typische Ereignisse für beide Krankheitsbilder und können Schweregrade erreichen, die eine Intensivtherapie notwendig machen.
