Die Migräne ist eine episodische, anfallsartig auftretende Erkrankung mit bis zu 72 h dauernden Kopfschmerzen, vegetativen, sensorischen und z. T. fokalneurologischen Symptomen. Die zumeist pulsierendpochenden starken Zephalgien sind mit Begleiterscheinungen wie Übelkeit, Erbrechen, Licht- und Lärmempfindlichkeit assoziiert und werden durch physische Aktivität verstärkt. Neben der am häufigsten vorkommenden Migräne ohne Aura treten in ca. 15% der Fälle vor der Kopfschmerzphase zumeist visuelle oder seltener sensible Erscheinungen auf, welche als Aura bezeichnet werden. Die seltene familiäre hemiplegische Migräne ist durch wiederkehrende Hemiparesen als Aurasymptom bei familiärer Häufung definiert.
