Eine Dysfunktion der Basalganglien ist für viele Bewegungsstörungen von zentraler Bedeutung. Basalganglionäre Efferenzen projizieren u. a. in den sensomotorischen Kortex. Eine abnorme Aktivität dieser Efferenzen führt zu einer veränderten Erregbarkeit verschiedener motorkortikaler Neuronenverbände. Auch an einer Integration sensorischer Reize bei unwillkürlichen und willkürlichen Bewegungen sind basalganglionäre Relaisstationen beteiligt. Der Mechanismus einer gestörten sensomotorischen Integration ist bei Bewegungsstörungen besonders für Dystonien bedeutsam.
