Die Epilepsien gehören zu den häufigsten schwerwiegenden chronischen neurologischen Erkrankungen. Die Inzidenz liegt in Nordamerika und Europa im Durchschnitt bei 0,06, die Prävalenz bei durchschnittlich 0,65 (Sander u. Shorvon 1996). Die Epilepsien werden in generalisierte und lokalisationsbezogene Epilepsien mit weiterer Unterteilung in idiopathische, symptomatische oder kryptogene Epilepsien eingeteilt. In die Einteilung epileptischer Anfälle und Syndrome fließt die Semiologie der Anfälle mit ein.
