Die Messprotokolle, die in diesem Kapitel vorgestellt werden, haben zum Ziel, über die Messung der Erregbarkeit in Verbindungen zwischen verschiedenen Hirnregionen und M1 eine Aussage über die funktionelle Konnektivität zwischen diesen Arealen zu treffen. Wünschenswert wären hierfür prinzipiell Methoden, mit denen es gelänge, selektiv sowohl die interessierende Region als auch M1 zu stimulieren, ohne benachbarte und oft eng verschaltete Areale gleichzeitig zu erregen. Des Weiteren ist anzustreben, Effekte zu erfassen, die über eine möglichst direkte Verschaltung vermittelt werden. Schließlich ist zu fordern, dass beobachtete Effekte ausreichend robust, reproduzierbar und, was Messungen mittels rTMS angeht, auch längere Zeit anhalten. Tatsächlich erfüllen die gegenwärtig zur Verfügung stehenden Messprotokolle jeweils nicht alle diese Bedingungen.
