TMS ist ein Verfahren, für dessen Anwendung die International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN) Leitlinien herausgegeben hat. Insbesondere der Bestimmung der kortikalen Reizschwelle wird innerhalb der Leitlinien besondere Beachtung geschenkt und die Passagen über Schwellen werden in wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten über TMS sehr häufig zitiert.
