Abstract

This chapter compares and contrasts the behavior of small clusters and their bulk counterparts, first in terms of the degree of distinguishability of the two kinds of excitations. The discussion identifies characteristic signatures of melting, then compares the nature of phase changes in small systems and opens a discussion of why they seem very different from the classic bulk phase transitions. The role of voids is examined further
