Abstract

This position paper deals with empirical case studies from an industry perspective. Empirical Software Engineering at Microsoft spans several areas including traditional software engineering and program analysis and HCI. From the perspective of transferring ideas and tools and techniques into the product teams Microsoft Research more or less behaves like an academic department and being closer to the problem. Some of the factors to conduct empirical studies from an industry view point to get a conversation started are described below. In general empirical studies are costly in industry due to the working environment constraints and the risks associated with failure.
