Abstract
Nearly 1,400,000 new cancer cases were expected in the year 2006, of which 679,450 would occur in women (Jemal et al. 2006). Around 8% of all female cancers occur under the age of 40 years, which corresponds to approximately 55,000 women in the United States (Oktay and Yih 2002). When all female cancers are considered, despite an increase in the cancer incidence by 0.3% per year from 1987 to 1999, the death rates for all cancers combined decreased by 0.6% per year from 1992 to 1999 as a result of improvements in current treatment modalities including surgical techniques, radiation therapy, multiagent chemotherapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Reis et al. 1999; Jemal et al. 2004). The cure rates for certain malignancies now exceed 90%. As a result, more women survive cancer every year to face the challenging long-term complications of the treatment.
