Im Zuge der Globalisierung der Wirtschaft kommt es zu einem rapide anwachsenden Austausch von Waren auf der Erde. Um dem zunehmenden Aufkommen und Kostendruck zu begegnen, verwenden immer mehr Transporteure computergestützte Planungssoftware, in der die Tourenplanung eine wesentliche Komponente ist. Innerhalb der Tourenplanung müssen schwierige Optimierungsaufgaben gelöst werden, die in der einschlägigen Literatur als Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP) bezeichnet werden. Neben dem Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) ist das Vehicle Routing Problem eine der meist untersuchten Optimierungsaufgaben. Seine Bedeutung als schwierige Optimierungsaufgabe mit Praxisbezug spiegelt sich in über 1.000 Veröffentlichungen wieder. Daher stehen viele spezielle Lösungsansätze für idealisierte Vehicle Routing Problems zur Verfügung, die in ihrer Ausprägung jedoch meistens sehr weit von realen Tourenplanungsproblemen entfernt sind.
