Abstract

Prerenal acute kidney failure is a form of acute kidney injury (AKI) that is rapidly reversible. It can be differentiated from intrinsic acute kidney failure, a condition that is not rapidly reversible, and often needs treatment with renal replacement therapy, by a series of biochemical and urine variables. Prerenal acute kidney failure is a heterogeneous group of conditions, with different pathogeneses. While some forms are caused by hypoperfusion of the kidneys, others are probably caused by inflammation and microcirculatory abnormalities of the kidneys. Prerenal acute kidney failure is a frequently occurring condition in hospitalized and intensive care unit (ICU) patients. When AKI is classified according to the most severe form during hospitalization, pre-renal acute kidney failure accounts for almost half of the cases of AKI, and is associated with a better prognosis than intrinsic acute kidney failure.
