Management of Acute Kidney Problems

Abstract

Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) is a cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) which is characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells within the renal tubules and interstitium. The etiology of ATIN is diverse but is most frequently associated to a drug reaction, infection, or autoimmune pathology. Diagnostic clues can be found from the patient’s history, examination, and laboratory investigation results, but a renal biopsy is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and facilitate early treatment. Drug-induced ATIN should be treated by stopping any causative agent and starting oral steroids. Infection-related and autoimmune ATIN should be managed by treating the underlying cause.
