Auszug

Auf dem Gebiet der Medizin ist eine Revolution im Gange. Neue Erkenntnisse in der molekularen Genetik und Biotechnologie und speziell die Entwicklungen in der Genomforschung führen zu bisher nicht da gewesenen Erkenntnissen, Fertigkeiten und Perspektiven. Dabei finden diese rasanten Veränderungen parallel auf drei Ebenen statt. Zum einen vergrößert der enorme Erkenntnisgewinn aus den Untersuchungen der Genomanalyse das grundlegende, molekulare Verständnis biologischer Vorgänge und führt damit zu direkten Verbesserungen in medizinischen Anwendungen. Zweitens stehen als Ergebnis der methodischen Entwicklungen neue Verfahren zur Verfügung, die umwälzende Diagnose- und Behandlungsformen ermöglichen. Und drittens wandelt sich zumindest ein Teil der biomedizinischen Diagnostik von der Untersuchung von Einzelaspekten zu einer Analyse gesamtheitlicher zellulärer Zusammenhänge — eine Entwicklung, die auch ein Umdenken der Wissenschaftler und Ärzte erfordert.
