Klinisch relevante Vorgänge im menschlichen Körper haben eine Entsprechung auf zellbiologischer und molekularer Ebene. Die zelluläre Reaktion kann dabei direkt oder auf den ersten Blick nur lose mit der klinischen Situation assoziiert sein. Beim Herzinfarkt beispielsweise kann man das unmittelbar auslösende thromboembolische Ereignis (Verschluss eines Blutgefäßes durch Gerinnsel) auch ohne zellbiologisches Wissen verstehen, aber bereits die Entstehung des Embolus sowie die arteriosklerotische Vorschädigung (Gefäßverkalkung) und die Reaktion des Organismus sind zytopathologisch erklärbar. Der Zytopathologie liegen wiederum subzelluläre, molekulare Prozesse zugrunde, die mehr und mehr bekannt werden.
