Abstract
Improvements in observational methods have opened the possibility to resolve structures on the surface of stars other than the Sun. With interferometric techniques on a ground based telescope (Buscher et al. 1990) and with the HST (Gilliland & Dupree 1996) a bright spot has been detected on the surface of Betelgeuse. Such surface inhomogeneities may result from magnetic activity, global pulsations, or perhaps from convection.
