Outflows from Young Stars

Abstract

Outflow activity seems to be intimately connected with the star formation process. However, the physical mechanism responsible for the mass loss is still essentially unknown. We briefly review some direct and indirect observations of outflows from young stellar objects on length-scales of parsecs down to a few stellar radii. We then present the current observational knowledge on the origin and collimation of the flows, as well as the theoretical framework in which they are explained, and review the main open questions, where considerable breakthrough is expected with the high angular resolution provided by an optical interferometer. Finally, we discuss in more detail the feasibility of such observations with the VLTI. Availability of the optical domain as well as long baselines (> 100 m) will be essential for this project.
