Abstract
Besides modelling the nervous system during development, excessive apoptotic cell death can take place in neurodegenerative diseases. Key molecules, which participate in the regulation and execution of apoptosis in non-neuronal cells (i.e., caspases, calpains, Bcl-2 related proteins and p53), seem to play important roles also in the death of cells of the nervous system. In addition, neuron specific death mechanisms have been unravelled, which are based on specific neuronal characteristics such as excitability and specific channels or enzymes. Particularly important for stroke in humans is excitotoxicity, which can result in either neuronal apoptosis or necrosis. Here, we will briefly review the evidence for the involvement of apoptosis in the pathology of the nervous system.
