Abstract

The performance gap between supercomputers and personal workstations is growing. Yet supercomputing resources are scarce and carefully managed. Gaining access to a leading national supercomputing centre requires a considerable amount of work comparable to the amount of work needed to get a paper published in a leading scientific journal. This raises the importance of centralised computing resources on the level of a single organization. We can outline several principles guiding the development of high performance computing on the scale of an academic organization.
