Abstract
Although since the pre-antibiotic era the great majority of cases of sinusitis are uncomplicated, sinus infections can readily spread to orbital or intracranial structures, with potential significant morbidity and even mortality. Complicated sinusitis is synonymous with sinus infection, orbital complications and intracranial complications. Epidemiological data concerning the complications of rhinosinusitis vary widely, and there is no consensus on the exact prevalence of the different types of complications. Orbital complications are more commonly seen in children, and infection arises in most cases because of ethmoid disease.
