Abstract

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has come a long way since Edwards and Steptoe’s first successful use of in vitro fertilization (IVF). The high success rates currently enjoyed with the various ART treatments are the direct result of past technical and pharmacologic improvements. Major technical innovations included transvaginal ultrasound for monitoring and egg retrieval, embryo cryopreservation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and standardization of laboratory and culture technique. Similarly, the pharmaceutical agents and treatment protocols used for ovarian stimulation have also continued to evolve.
