The history and future of extinction models

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: ESO Astrophysics Symposia ((ESO))

Abstract

Extinction models play a crucial role in our understanding of spiral galaxies. But, although they have gradually improved over the last four decades, the models are still very far from the complex reality actually observed in spiral galaxies. Here, first an overview of the history of extinction models is presented. Next, the current models are compared with spiral galaxies, and the implications of the lack of realistic structure in the models are discussed. Finally, some alternative routes towards more realistic extinction models are suggested.
