Abstract

Polarimetry in the IR range, in imaging and in spectroscopy, is very important in the study of distant galaxies to improve our understanding of the early Universe, both of the active galaxies, by disentangling the stellar and the active components, and by clarifying the unification issue for the most luminous AGN, as well as of the normal galaxies, by checking for the presence of a non-stellar component, by providing information on the dust content and properties, and by clarifying the links between galaxy formation and activity. Better coverage of the IR polarimetry is necessary to be able to attack these problems with the VLT instruments.
