Abstract
We discuss searches for brown dwarfs orbiting nearby stars and progress in defining the mass-luminosity relation for the lowest mass stars and brown dwarf candidates. We also outline how brown dwarfs fit into our current understanding of the nearest stars, and present the luminosity and mass functions for stars within 8 pc of the Sun.
