Part of the book series: ESO Astrophysics Symposia ((ESO))

Abstract

High spatial resolution infrared imaging and spectroscopy with the VLT, using adaptive optics and interferometry, will result in very significant progress in our understanding of galactic nuclei. Extrapolating from recent progress in the field and the technological advances in infrared instrumentation expected in the near future an outlook is attempted of what the VLT may achieve. Obscured nuclear star clusters and bright individual stars can be studied in detail. The distribution and dynamics of interstellar gas disks and flows on scales of a few parsecs or less can be investigated. The environment of massive central black holes can be studied on scales of less than 1000 Schwarzschild radii. Starbursts in high redshift galaxies can be spatially resolved.
