Electromagnetic Fields

Abstract

From the discussion in the previous chapter it became clear that specific desired effects on particle trajectories require specific magnetic fields. Dipole fields are the proper fields to bend particle beams and quadrupole magnets serve, for example, as beam focusing devices. To obtain an explicit formulation of the equations of motion of charged particles in an arbitrary magnetic field we derive the general magnetic fields consistent with Maxwell’s equations.
