Summary
Optical twist was introduced in 1993 as an unconventional phase that rotates and diffracts symmetric, partially coherent, Gaussian beams. Symmetrization of arbitrary astigmatic fields, such as TEM modes or radiation from diode-laser arrays, yields non-Gaussian beams endowed with a twist. The general properties and experimental realization of both Gaussian and non-Gaussian twisted beams are described with illustrative physical examples. As an application, the role of the twist in beam quality is elucidated. The relation of the twist to optical vortices and angular momentum is addressed. Some unsolved issues are pointed out.
