Zerebrale Anfälle gehören zu den häufigsten Symptomen einer Erkrankung des Gehirns im Kindesalter. Treten sie akut im Rahmen einer vorübergehenden Funktionsstörung auf, so spricht man von Gelegenheitsanfällen (⊡ Übersicht). Rezidivierende, nicht durch äußere Ereignisse provozierte Anfälle führen zur Diagnose einer Epilepsie. Die Prävalenz der Gelegenheitsanfälle wird im Kindesalter mit mindestens 5% angegeben, die der Epilepsien mit 0,5%.
