Der Morbus Behçet wurde anfänglich auf Grund der Haut- und Schleimhautulzerationen sowie Augenentzündungen den okulomukokutanen Syndromen zugeordnet. Heute wird er als Multiorganerkrankung den systemischen Vaskulitiden zugerechnet. Auffällig ist die unterschiedliche Häufigkeit der Erkrankung in verschiedenen ethnischen Gruppen, mit der höchsten Prävalenz in der Türkei, gefolgt von Japan und den arabischen Ländern.
