»Soziotherapie« ist heute kein international gebräuchlicher Begriff der Medizin, wenngleich Ansatz und Methoden in der gesamten Medizin verbreitet sind. Eine aktuelle Literaturrecherche in der amerikanischen medizinischen Nationalbibliothek ergibt z. B., dass der Begriff in den letzten 10 Jahren praktisch nur noch von deutschen oder kontinentaleuropäischen Autoren genutzt wird, während er im angloamerikanischen Raum nicht mehr gebräuchlich ist. In der Tendenz wenden sich Soziotherapieverfahren entweder an die sog. gesunden Anteile (»Ressourcen«) des Individuums oder an seine Umgebung mit dem Versuch, durch deren Beeinflussung die Krankheit des Patienten zu bessern oder gar zu heilen. So gibt es Projekte zum betreuten Wohnen oder zur Ergotherapie sowohl in der inneren Medizin als auch in der Pädiatrie oder eben der Psychiatrie.
